Forged In-House, Start to Finish
HRE Performance Wheels designs, engineers, and manufactures every wheel in-house at their own facility in Vista, California, just north of San Diego. Every Monoblok, FMR® 2-piece, and 3-piece forged wheel is built to order — a customer's exact width, offset, bolt pattern, and finish, forged and finished under one roof rather than mass-produced.
Forging
Every wheel starts as a solid billet of 6061 aluminum, forged under thousands of tons of press pressure into a raw "blank" — dense, aircraft-grade aluminum with a tighter grain structure than a cast wheel. A 21" wheel can start as a ~125 lb forging before it's machined down to its finished weight, so most of what leaves the press ends up as scrap on the floor, not on the wheel.
CNC Lathe & Milling
The raw forging is lathed first to rough in the wheel's profile and lug bowl, then moved to 4- and 5-axis CNC mills that cut the spoke design to the customer's exact size, width, offset, and bolt pattern. Curved, sculpted spoke faces take considerably longer to mill than a simple straight-cut design — a traveler sheet stays with the wheel through every station so nothing gets built to the wrong spec.
Hand Finishing
Brushed and polished finishes are done by hand on a foot-controlled turning wheel, working outward at a consistent speed for uniform grain — roughly 3 hours per wheel for a brushed finish, upward of 20 hours for a full polish. Powder coat finishes are cleaned and degreased, sprayed with an electrostatically-charged powder, then cured in a filtered oven so the finish stays free of dust.
Quality Control
Every wheel is inspected at each stage of the build, not just at the end, and is serialized with an order number that stays on the wheel for reference after it ships. HRE's Vista, CA facility builds to both U.S. DOT and German TÜV safety standards.
Every finish in the configurator above is applied using this exact process.
