E90 to G80: A Buyer's Guide to Every BMW M3 Generation — and the Parts That Keep Them Sharp
Three chassis codes, three completely different characters, one obsession: the BMW M3. Since the E90/E92/E93 launched in 2007, the M3 nameplate has gone from screaming naturally-aspirated V8 to twin-turbo inline-six brute force, and every generation has built up a devoted following of owners who want to make theirs sharper, louder, and more track-capable than it left the factory. Here at Iconic Garage we live in the parts bins for all three generations every day, so we figured it was time to put together the guide we wish someone had handed us when we bought our first M3.
E90 / E92 / E93 (2007–2013): The Last Great Naturally-Aspirated V8
The S65 4.0L V8 in the E9X M3 revs to 8,400 rpm and makes every one of its 414 horsepower feel earned. It's the enthusiast's choice precisely because there's no turbo lag to mask — throttle response is immediate, and the sound is unforgettable. The trade-off is a chassis that's now well over a decade old, which means rubber bushings are tired, factory brakes are working overtime, and the suspension geometry benefits enormously from modern coilovers and camber correction.
The most common first upgrades we see on E9X cars: a proper coilover or camber plate setup to bring the geometry back to spec, big-brake kits or at minimum fresh rotors and pads to keep up with track days, and a wheel refresh — the factory wheels are heavy, and a lightweight forged setup transforms how the car turns in.

F80 / F82 / F83 (2014–2020): Turbocharged and Track-Ready Out of the Box
BMW's move to the twin-turbo S55 inline-six was controversial when it happened and is completely vindicated in hindsight — 425+ horsepower and a wall of torque from just above idle makes the F8X generation genuinely quick in a way the E9X never was. It's also the generation where BMW started taking cooling seriously from the factory, but the extra power and heat mean the supporting cast matters even more: cooling upgrades, driveshaft and subframe reinforcements, and brake cooling ducts are common additions once cars start seeing regular track time.
Wheel and suspension setups carry over as the highest-value upgrades here too — the F8X chassis responds extremely well to a proper alignment spec and a lightweight wheel that lets the S55's power actually get to the ground instead of spinning up 19-inch factory rubber.

G80 / G82 / G83 (2021–present): The Modern Benchmark
The current generation brought the S58, a further-evolved twin-turbo six shared with the M3 Competition, M4, and the CS/CSL halo cars, along with a chassis that's stiffer and more capable than anything that's worn the M3 badge before it. Where the E9X and F8X communities are deep into aftermarket suspension and brake development, the G8X scene is still maturing — but fitment and wheel work is very much here today. If you're running aftermarket wheels on a G8X car, a correct hub-centric fitment kit matters more than most owners realize for vibration-free, safe operation.
