G80 M3 & G82 M4 Tuning Stages: S58 Power Guide
The S58 is the most tunable engine BMW M has ever put in a 3 or 4 Series. Closed-deck block, forged crank, 350-bar injection, two mono-scroll turbos, and a factory calibration that leaves a lot on the table. That headroom is why a stock-hardware G80 M3 or G82 M4 Competition can pick up the better part of 100 hp with a flash, and why the same engine holds together at more than double factory output with the right supporting parts.
This guide lays out what each stage actually is on the G8X platform, what power you can realistically expect at each step, what hardware is required versus optional, and where owners tend to get themselves into trouble. Numbers are quoted as ranges because fuel, ambient temperature, and dyno type move them around more than most people admit.
Where the S58 starts: factory output by model
Before talking gains, get the baseline right, because it changed mid-cycle. Per BMW's own 2025 M3 press release, the S58B30T0 now ships in three outputs:
- M3 / M4 (base, 6-speed manual): 473 hp at 6,250 rpm, 406 lb-ft from 2,650 to 6,130 rpm.
- M3 / M4 Competition (RWD, 8-speed): 503 hp at 6,250 rpm, 479 lb-ft from 2,750 to 5,500 rpm.
- M3 / M4 Competition xDrive (2025+): 523 hp at 6,250 rpm, 479 lb-ft from 2,750 to a higher 5,730 rpm. BMW says the extra 20 hp is purely engine-management calibration on identical hardware.
That last line is the whole story of Stage 1 in one sentence. If BMW can find 20 hp and 230 rpm of torque plateau with software alone, and the base-to-Competition gap of 30 hp is also software plus a torque limiter, the aftermarket has a lot of room to work with before a single bolt comes off.
Also note the intercooler: a compact air-to-water unit on its own low-temperature circuit. It is the first thing that runs out of capacity when boost goes up.
Stage 1: flash tune on stock hardware
Stage 1 is a calibration change and nothing else. Boost targets, ignition timing, torque limiters in every gear, and throttle mapping get rewritten within the limits of the factory turbos, intercooler, and fuel system. No downpipes, no intake, no charge pipe.
Real-world numbers on a G80/G82 Competition with 93-octane pump fuel:
- Stock: 503 to 523 hp / 479 lb-ft (crank).
- Stage 1, 93 octane: roughly 580 to 600 hp and 560 to 580 lb-ft at the crank. That is a 70 to 90 hp gain and 80 to 100 lb-ft of torque.
- Stage 1, E30 blend: gains push past 100 hp and 120 lb-ft. Ethanol's cooling effect and knock resistance let the tuner run more timing and boost than pump gas allows.
The seat-of-the-pants change is bigger than the dyno sheet suggests, because most of the torque gain lands in the 2,500 to 4,500 rpm window where BMW's factory torque limiters are most conservative. Third-gear pulls feel like a different car.
What Stage 1 does not need: a new intake. The factory airbox on the S58 flows well enough for Stage 1 and most Stage 2 setups. An aftermarket G8X intake is a sound and throttle-response upgrade first and a power upgrade second; treat it as optional at this level.
The ECU unlock: what changed for 2021+ cars
This is the part that catches new owners out. Every G80, G82, G83, and G87 uses the Bosch MDG1 ECU, which BMW locked from the factory. Before any flash tuner can write to it, the DME needs a one-time unlock.
- It's a one-time job. Once unlocked, the ECU stays unlocked through map changes, tuner switches, and dealer software updates in most cases. You pay for it once.
- Bench versus OBD. Traditionally the DME had to come out of the car and be unlocked on a bench, or shipped to a service. Several G80 owners on Bimmerpost's G80/G82 forum have documented the process and the newer OBD-based options; read the current threads before you commit because availability changes by ECU revision.
- Budget for it. Whether it's bundled into a tuner's "unlock package" or sold separately, factor it into the Stage 1 cost rather than treating the flash price as the whole number.
Pick your tuning platform first, then use whichever unlock path that platform supports.
Stage 2: downpipes, midpipes and heat
Stage 2 is where hardware enters the conversation, and on the S58 the hardware is the exhaust. The S58 runs two sets of catalytic converters: primary cats in the downpipes directly off the turbos, and secondary cats in the midpipe. The secondary cats are the more restrictive of the two, so "Stage 2 downpipes" on this engine really means downpipes plus midpipe if you want the full effect.
Removing or replacing that restriction with high-flow catted or catless sections lets the turbos spool faster and hold boost further into the rev range. Typical Stage 2 results on 93 octane:
- Stage 2, 93 octane: roughly 630 to 660 hp and 600 to 620 lb-ft at the crank. Call it 130 to 150 hp over stock Competition figures.
- Stage 2, E30 or higher: stock-turbo cars have been dynoed in the 640 to 650 wheel-horsepower range with downpipes, midpipe, and a high-flow filter. That's around 150 whp over a stock baseline.
Two things people get wrong at Stage 2:
Ignoring intercooler capacity. The factory air-to-water intercooler is compact by design. At Stage 2 boost on a hot day, intake air temperatures climb across a single pull and the DME pulls timing in response. That's why Stage 2 dyno numbers are so inconsistent between cars: the ones with a larger heat exchanger and a proper charge pipe hold their timing; the ones without fall off after the second pull. If you're going past Stage 1 in a warm climate, browse the G8X cooling collection before you buy exhaust.
Reusing the factory charge pipe. The stock plastic charge pipe is fine at factory boost and is a known failure point above it. An aluminum charge pipe, like the Mishimoto hot-side charge pipe kit for the G8X, is cheap insurance relative to the rest of a Stage 2 build.

Beyond Stage 2: turbos, fuel and the 800 hp path
Stage 3 on the S58 means upgraded turbochargers, and at that point the factory fuel system and intercooler are both out of headroom. Builds in the 750 to 850 hp range consistently share the same recipe: hybrid or drop-in upgraded turbos, a front-mount or upgraded heat exchanger for the air-to-water system, port injection or a fuel system upgrade, and either E85 or methanol injection for knock control.
The good news is that the bottom end holds. Closed-deck construction and a forged crank mean owners are making those numbers on stock internals, which is not something you could say about the S55 without a lot of caveats. Cams, valves, and springs from the G8X engine collection come into the picture when you're chasing a higher rev ceiling or supporting very large turbos, not before.
Stage 3 is a different budget category. A Stage 2 car is a fast, reliable daily. A Stage 3 car needs fuel logistics, a tuner who knows the platform, and an owner willing to datalog.
How to choose your stage
The right answer depends on how you use the car, not on the biggest number you can afford.
- Daily driver, occasional canyon run: Stage 1 on 93 octane. Biggest gain per dollar, no hardware, no noise change, and the factory intercooler keeps up.
- Weekend car, some track days: Stage 1 plus cooling upgrades before Stage 2. Track work exposes intercooler and oil temperature limits before it exposes exhaust restrictions.
- Street car that needs to win the roll race: Stage 2 with downpipes, midpipe, upgraded heat exchanger, and charge pipe, on E30. This is the sweet spot for the platform.
- Dedicated build: Stage 3 with the full fuel, cooling, and turbo package. Plan the whole build before buying the first part.
On xDrive cars: the 523 hp Competition xDrive starts 20 hp ahead, but the tuned ceiling is the same because the hardware is identical. Expect matching Stage 1 and 2 numbers, and far better launches.
FAQ
Does a Stage 1 tune void my BMW warranty?
It can. BMW can detect a flashed DME and has denied powertrain claims on tuned cars. Most flash platforms let you return to the stock map before a dealer visit, but the flash counter can still be read. Go in with clear eyes.
Do I need downpipes for Stage 1?
No. Stage 1 is defined as stock hardware. Downpipes and midpipe are what make it Stage 2 and require a matching Stage 2 calibration.
Is the ECU unlock permanent?
In practice yes. Once the MDG1 is unlocked it remains writable across map changes, and the unlock survives most dealer software updates. Confirm current behavior for your ECU revision with your tuner.
Is the S58 stronger than the S55 for tuning?
Yes. The S58's closed-deck block, forged crank, and better factory cooling let it carry Stage 2 and Stage 3 power on stock internals with more margin than the S55 had.
