E9X M3 Suspension Refresh: Bushings, Coilovers & Specs
The E9X M3 is now old enough that most of them are riding on rubber that has been flexing since the Obama administration. The S65 still revs to 8,400 rpm and feels new, which is exactly why the suspension underneath it gets ignored — the engine masks how vague the chassis has become. If your E90, E92 or E93 has started tramlining, thunking over expansion joints, or eating the inside edge of a set of Pilot Sport 4S, the problem is almost never the shocks alone.
This is a practical walkthrough of what actually wears out on these cars, how to decide between an OE-spec refresh and a coilover setup, and the torque figures and mistakes that separate a job you do once from a job you do twice.
What Actually Wears Out on a High-Mileage E9X
Four things account for the overwhelming majority of "my M3 feels loose" complaints, and only one of them is the damper.
Front control arm and tension strut bushings. The tension strut (the forward arm, often called the FCAB in forum shorthand) carries braking loads and takes the worst of it. As the rubber softens, dynamic toe changes under braking and turn-in. That is the wandering, follow-every-groove-in-the-road feeling. It usually shows up between 60,000 and 90,000 miles and it shows up gradually enough that owners adapt to it without noticing.
Rear subframe bushings. Every rear suspension pickup point mounts to the subframe, so when those four bushings harden and shrink, everything downstream moves. The signature is a distinct thunk on throttle application or when transitioning on and off power — and it is worth checking properly, because on an E9X a thunk can also be a failing differential mount.
Rear lower control arm bushings. These affect rear toe stability and are a common source of uneven inner-shoulder rear tire wear.
Front strut mounts. Often skipped because they look fine. A tired mount adds a knock over sharp impacts and takes the precision out of steering just off center.
Diagnose before you buy. Get the car on a lift, put a pry bar on each arm and watch the bushing rather than the joint. Rubber that visibly deflects, cracks radially, or has separated from its outer sleeve is done. OE Refresh, Poly Bushings, or Full Coilovers?
These are three genuinely different goals, and picking the wrong one is how people end up with a stiff, noisy car they stop enjoying.
- OE-spec refresh. Replace worn bushings and mounts with genuine BMW or OE-supplier parts (Lemförder, TRW). Restores the factory feel, keeps the ride compliant, and is the correct answer for a street car you actually drive. Least expensive, least drama.
- Polyurethane or spherical bushings. Sharpens turn-in and holds alignment under load. The Powerflex Black Series tension strut bushing set is the common step here. Expect more road noise and more transmitted harshness — a fair trade on a weekend and track car, less so on a daily commute.
- Lowering springs. A drop and a modest spring rate increase on factory dampers. Cheap, but on a car with 90,000-mile shocks you are asking tired dampers to control stiffer springs, and they will not.
- Coilovers. Ride height and damping control in one package. Something like the H&R Street Performance coilover kit is the sensible street-biased option. Note the fitment carefully: that kit is the non-EDC version, and a large number of E9X M3s left the factory with Electronic Damping Control. One honest note on order of operations: coilovers bolted to worn bushings are a waste of money. The bushings define where the geometry sits; the dampers only control how fast it moves. Refresh the mounting points first, or do both together.
Sway Bars and the Rest of the Chassis

Sway bars are the cheapest meaningful handling change on an E9X and the easiest to overdo. The factory M3 setup is already fairly neutral, so a matched front-and-rear kit such as the H&R 27 mm front / 23 mm rear sway bar kit keeps the balance rather than dialing in snap oversteer the way a rear-only bar can. If you are chasing rotation on track, adjust with tire pressures and alignment before you go stiffer on the rear bar.
While the car is apart, replace the end links. They are inexpensive, they wear at roughly the same rate as everything else, and a worn link produces a rattle that people spend weekends chasing elsewhere.
Doing the Job: Sequence, Tools and Torque
Budget a full weekend for a front-and-rear refresh if you are working on jack stands, and expect penetrating oil and heat to be part of the process on any car that has seen salt. A press or a proper bushing tool kit is not optional — the rear subframe bushings in particular are not coming out with a hammer and optimism.

Five Mistakes That Ruin a Good Install
- Skipping the alignment. Non-negotiable. Every bushing you replaced changed the geometry, and an E9X will scrub a set of tires remarkably quickly out of spec.
- Torquing conventional rubber bushings at full droop. Rubber bushings should be tightened with the suspension loaded at ride height, or the bushing sits permanently pre-twisted and fails early. The M3's front lower arm uses a sealed spherical inner joint rather than a conventional rubber bush, so it is less sensitive here — but the rear arms are not, so load the suspension before final torque.
- Reusing stretch bolts. They are torque-to-yield by design. Buy the hardware with the arms.
- Mixing old and new across an axle. A fresh arm on one side and a 90,000-mile arm on the other produces an asymmetric car that no alignment will fix.
- Going too low. Below roughly 25 mm of drop the E9X front geometry starts working against you, roll centers move, and the car gains stance while losing grip. Set ride height for how you actually drive it.
FAQ
How do I know if it's the subframe bushings or the differential mounts?
Both thunk on throttle transitions. Have a helper shift between drive and reverse against the brake while you watch the subframe and the diff separately from underneath — you are looking for which one moves relative to the chassis.
Can I run coilovers on an EDC-equipped E9X M3?
Only with EDC-specific hardware, or by running a non-EDC kit alongside a delete module to suppress the fault. Confirm whether your car has EDC before ordering; it was optional, and both configurations are common.
Do I need to replace the rear subframe bushings if the fronts are worn?
Not automatically, but they are the same age and the labor is the expensive part. If the car is already on the lift and the rear is coming apart, doing them together is the cheaper decision over the life of the car.
Are polyurethane bushings too harsh for a daily driver?
